“巨型蓝色喷流被发现”

在2002年的觀測季裡，成功大學物理系「紅色精靈研究團隊」7月22日在鵝鑾鼻進行觀測時，記錄到呂宋島西方海域一個雷雨系統和高層大氣之間的五個巨大噴流，這些噴流起源自十六公里高的雲頂，一直延伸到九十公里的高空。這種特殊的自然現象，全世界的科學家到目前為止只記錄到六例。

lightning jets discovered

A DRAMATIC new kind of lightning has
been caught on camera. Scientists in Taiwan have
filmed five enormous lightning bolts they are
calling "gigantic jets" reaching an altitude of 90
kilometres. The jets could play a vital role in
dissipating the electrical charge that thunderstorms
transport to the upper atmosphere.
For decades, pilots have reported
seeing strange glows above the clouds, including
dancing red blobs with tentacles and blue jets
shaped like water fountains. At first the sightings
were dismissed as imaginary, but over the past
decade cameras have recorded two main categories:
red "sprites" at high altitudes, and narrow "blue
jets" that burst upwards from cloud tops.
Now a team led by Han-Tzong Su and
Rue-Ron Hsu of National Cheng Kung University in
Taiwan have revealed another type - gigantic jets.

Puzzled observers had reported such sightings since at least
1886, but without producing a photograph or
videotape. What should science do with such reports,
given our proclivity to conjure up little green (or
gray) “men,” report Venus to 9-1-1 as a UFO, and
read more into observations of natural phenomena
than facts warrant? Science needs to be patient, to
wait for evidence. As the late Carl Sagan often
said, extraordinary claims require extraordinary
evidence. Science deals with facts, not forcing
observations to conform to fanciful speculation.
Mystics, poets, and the ancients were adept at
speculation. And although they provided entertaining
and amazing tales...that is all they were.
